When Petersburg resident Otis Sites decided to make a donation to the new Grant County Performing Arts Center, he elected to go with something he knew all about.

That was a couple of top-quality AERUS commercial vaccum cleaners. He's shown here presenting the donated items to arts center committee member Phyllis Cole.

Sites has been in the vaccum cleaner sales and service business for as long as anyone can remember. The two new vacuums will be used at the center, which is moving toward a mid-summer opening date.

"Wild and Wonderful" coming to a highway sign near you

West Virginia Division of Highways crews are changing the lettering on the state's highway welcome signs from "Open for Business" to "Wild and Wonderful," according to state Department of Transportation Secretary Paul Mattox.

The change makes official last October's vote by 49,000 West Virginians who overwhelmingly chose the slogan to adorn the state's roadway entrance signs.

The first signs to be completed are on the Silver Bridge in Mason County and on the three bridges over the Ohio River in Cabell County: the 17th Street Bridge along US 52, the East Huntington Bridge along WV 106 and the 6th Street Bridge along WV 527. These four bridges are the first of the 27 major entry signs to replace the slogan to "Wild and Wonderful" and are expected to be completed by Memorial Day, weather permitting.

For these large signs, the previous lettering will be removed and replaced with the new slogan. The "Welcome to West Virginia" portion on the top of the sign remains &endash; only the slogan at the bottom is being replaced.

Changes to the roughly 80 smaller "welcome" signs along other state entry points are scheduled to be complete by the end of June.
