James Edward Alt, 58, of Summit Drive, Moorefield, died Oct. 29, at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va. Born July 5, 1947, in Petersburg, he was the son of Norma Jean (Puffenbarger) Alt Moog of Baltimore and the late Earl Edward Alt. He was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Sara Alt. Besides his mother, he is also survived by his wife, Norma Carol (Mister) Alt of Moorefield; two sons, James Edward Alt Jr. of Upper Tract and Kevin Edward Alt of Bel Air, Md; two daughters, Jessica Alt and Ashley Alt, both of Moorefield; one stepson, Michael Wilson of Baltimore; one stepdaughter, Mary Sherba of Bel Air; two sisters, Sharon Sites of Upper Tract and Brenda Alt of Moorefield; two brothers, Terry Alt of Arthur and Gary Alt of Maysville; three stepsisters, Linda Kootnz of Petersburg, Sandra Davidson of Baltimore and Vickie Williamson of Salisbury, Md.; a half brother, Jake Moog of Arthur; and eight grandchildren, Brittney Nicole Wilson, whom they raised, and Lauren Alt, Sarah Sherba, Kyle Lutz, Angel Alt, Kevin Alt, Gabriel Alt and Michael Wilson. Evelyn L. Bonner, 95, Bayard, died Oct. 28, at the Dennett Road Manor Nursing Home, Oakland, Md. Born July 24, 1910, in Gorman, Md., she was the daughter of the late Theodore and Bessie (Ridder) Eger. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Homer L. Bonner, in 1956, and by a son, Kenneth E. Bonner in 1985. She is survived by one grandson, Clarence L. Bonner, Bayard. At her request, her body was cremated. Wayne E. "Keppie" Keplinger, 75, of Keyser, died Oct. 30, of cancer, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, Md. Beulah M. (Blackburn) Martin, 90, of Indianapolis, Ind., and formerly of Burlington and Mount Storm, died Thursday, Oct. 27. She was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Martin and a sister, Juanita McCarty. She is survived by one son, Andrew Martin of Granite City, Ill.; one daughter, Regina Fox of Indianapolis; six grandchildren, Brenda Arthur, Donna Mullin, Gina Brewster, DeAnna Bruner, Lori Zadotka and Derek Martin; 13 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. William Lowndes McLaughlin, 77, Lexington, Va. died Oct. 26, at his home, from pancreatic cancer. He was born March 30, 1928, in Stoney Point, Tenn., the son of the Rev. John Calvin Brown and Fanny (McCaa) McLaughlin. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Nancy Shepherd in 1996. He is survived by his wife, Nancy (Scott) McLaughlin of Lexington; two sons, Peter McLaughlin of Tucson, Ariz. and David McLaughlin of Winchester, Va.; two stepsons, Theodore Kiesselbach of Minneapolis and Frederick Anderson of San Diego; two sisters, Margaret Grove of Charlottesville , Va. and Addie Noble Ours of Petersburg; and six grandchildren. Angie Irene (Kline) Moreland, 88, of Mount Storm, died Oct. 28, at her residence. Born June 28, 1917, in Scherr, she was the daughter of the late Charlie H. Kline and Etta Mae (Hanlin) Kline. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Carl W. Moreland, Oct. 5, 2004; two infant sons; an infant daughter; four infant great-grandchildren; and one brother, Ralph Kline. Mrs. Ettie Marie (Mongold) Strawderman, 91, of Mathias, died Oct. 24, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg, Va. Born Sept. 10, 1914, in Hardy County, she was the daughter of the late Nathaniel and Sarah Frances (Delawder) Mongold. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Waldo Strawderman, whom she married June 1, 1932 and died June 14, 1980; and four grandchildren. She was the last surviving member of her family. Frances Magdalene Wright, 68, of Franklin, died Friday, Nov. 4, at her residence. Born June 17, 1937, in Franklin, she was the daughter of the late George Sherman Wright and Margie Anna (Moats) Wright. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, George Wright, Paul Wright and Lee Wright; two sisters, Shirley Wright and Charlotte Redman; and one great-grandson, Malakai Wright. She was a seamstress, retired from Connie Sportswear in Franklin. She was a member of Emmanuel Chapel AME Church. Michael Dominick Dabate, 75, of Rivesville and formerly of Petersburg, died Nov. 25, at his residence, after a lengthy illness. Born Dec. 22, 1929, in Fairmont, he was the son of the late Joseph and Rose Ann (Prioletti) Dabate. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Lucille (Dabate) Beafore. Mr. Dabate was a night club owner and cabinet maker. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Elks #294, VFW and American Legion. He graduated in 1948 from East Fairmont High School and was a veteran serving in the U.S. Navy. He is survived by three daughters, Marie A. McVicker and Rose M. Pauline Jane Cunningham Frye, age 91, of Fairmont, died in Wishing Well Health Center on Dec. 14, following a long illness. Born in Clover Lick, WV, Jan. 17, 1914, Mrs. Frye was a retired Marion and Grant County teacher and the widow of A. Neil Frye, retired Fairmont State professor and former Grant County Superintendent of Schools. She was the fourth of five daughters born to Mary Virginia and John Cunningham. She is survived by her four children, Judge Andrew N. Frye Jr. of Petersburg, Dr. John Frye of Fairmont, Ms. Mary Frye of Charlton Heights and Dr. Paul Frye of Pittsburgh, Pa. Other survivors include one granddaughter Barbara Beto and six grandsons, John Frye Jr., Andrew N. Frye III, Mark Frye, Christopher Frye, Neil E. Frye and Wyatt Frye, as well as five great-grandsons and four great-granddaughters, her daughters-in-law, a son-in-law and her nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Neil Frye, her parents, John and Mary Virginia Cunningham, her four sisters, Ruth Cunningham, Ethel Wamsley, Mildred Wolfe, Mary Virginia Hutson and one grandson, Ernest Weimer Frye. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Homer Koontz; two sons, David R. Hobert M. Rohrbaugh, 86, of Baker, formerly of New Creek, died Dec. 26, at E.A. Hawse Continuous Care Center, Baker. Born Sept. 23, 1919, at Maysville, he was the son of the late George and Gertrude (Keplinger) Rohrbaugh. He was also preceded in death by his wife, June M. Harvey C. Whetzel, 80, of Franklin, died Wednesday, Jan. 4, at his home. Born June 30, 1925, at Dumpling Run, Hardy County, he was the son of the late Silas Whetzel and Dora Alice (Mongold) Whetzel. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ersley (Ratliff) Whetzel, Jan. 27, 2005. They were married Sept. 30, 1946. He was also preceded in death by 10 sisters and two brothers. Mr. Whetzel had worked for the Grant County Department of Highways and had retired from Hanover Shoe Company, after 17 years of service. He was a member of the Friends Run Church of the Brethren. William Blaine Likins Sr., 89, of Burlington, died Jan. 4, at Dawn View Center, Fort Ashby. Born March 22, 1916, at Williamsport, he was the son of the late Hiram Dall and Nannie Lee (Smith) Likins. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mary Faye (Reed) Likins, May 6, 1997; and two sisters, Arbutus Harris and Cora Shirril. Mr. Likins was retired as an electrical welder at the Celanese Amcelle Plant, with 19 years of service. He also worked in the shipyards in Baltimore, for a number of years. Harold "Flipper" Vossler, 62, of Boulder, Colo. and formerly of Petersburg, died March 8, at Mesa Vista Nursing Center, Boulder. Born April 28, 1943, in Kansas City, Kan., he was the son of the late Edward and Elizabeth (Anderson) Vossler. He is survived by his brother, Dick, sister-in-law Kathy, nephew Rich and wife Angie, niece Heather, husband Mike and great-nephew Benjamin, all of Colorado; as well as his brother David, sister-in-law Carol, niece Kelli, and nephews Jeffrey and Thomas, all of upstate New York. He also left behind dear friends in Petersburg, including Dottie and Gordon Riggleman and family, Icky and Mary Cay Hyre and family and the Larry Berg family and many others. To the end of his life, he enjoyed looking at photographs of his years in Petersburg and corresponded with many of his friends. Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Hickman, 84, of Cabins, died March 14, at her home. Born Oct. 16, 1921 in Cabins, she was the daughter of the late William Hewey Kile and Mary Belle (Johnson) Kile Sites. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard H. Hickman, Jan. 31, 1991; one son, Harold "Bucky" Hickman; and five brothers, an infant brother, Glenn Kile, Brooke Kile, Forrest Kile and Emmett Kile. She is survived by one son, Brice M. Hickman of Cabins; one sister, Grace Simmons of Petersburg; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were March 17, at Schaeffer Funeral Home chapel, Petersburg. Mrs. Linda (Swick) Cartee, 64, of Severn, Md., formerly of Petersburg, died March 14, at a hospital in Glen Burnie, Md. Born March 19, 1941 in Petersburg, she was the daughter of the late Joe D. Swick and Treva (Ours) Swick Johnson. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Larry R. Cartee Sr. of Severn, Md.; one son,Larry R. Cartee, Jr. of Sykesville, Md.; one daughter, Cindy Henneman of Middle River, Md.; four grandchildren; five brothers and sisters; 13 stepbrothers and sisters; and her stepmother, Myrtle Swick of Petersburg. Donnie Edward "Boonie" Whetzel, 34, of Maysville, died March 12, at his residence. Born June 20, 1971, in Petersburg, he was the son of Wendy (Whetzel) VanMeter and Larry VanMeter of Petersburg. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Virginia and Harry Whetzel. Besides his parents, he is survived by his wife, Crystal (Merritt) Whetzel; one daughter, Ashlyn Whetzel of Maysville; two sons, Scott Whetzel and Dalton Long, both of Maysville; two sisters, Teresa Myers of Fisher and Barbie Shook of Maysville; and a number of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services were March 16, at the Schaeffer Funeral Home chapel, Petersburg. Interment was in the Lahmansville Cemetery, Lahmansville. Mrs. Georgia O. Shook, 81, died March 12, at Cumberland, Md. Born Feb. 9, 1925, in Petersburg, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Vina A. Simons, Elsie M. Mongold and Virginia W. Mowery; and two brothers, Fred D. Shook and Neil R. Shook. She is survived by one sister, Mary D. (Fador) Lemon of Harman, Md. Funeral services were March 17, at Singleton Funeral Home, PA. Mrs. Erma Ora (James) Byrd, died March 25. Born in 1917, in Floyd County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Fred and Mary James. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Beulah Minton; and one grandson, Jon Michael Moore. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Sen. Robert C. Byrd, whom she married May 29, 1937; two daughters, Mona Carole Byrd Fatemi and Marjorie Ellen Byrd Moore; three grandsons, Erik Fatemi, Darius Fatemi and Fredrik Fatemi; two granddaughters, Mona Byrd Moore Pearson and Mary Anne Moore Clarkson; great-granddaughters, Caroline Byrd Fatemi, Kathryn James Fatemi, Anna Cristina Honora Fatemi, Emma James Clarkson and Hannah Byrd Clarkson; and great-grandson Michael Yoo Fatemi. Mrs. Irene Mae "Renie" (Lantz) Tanner, 76, of Petersburg, died March 24, at Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg. Born Aug. 21, 1929, in Franklin, she was the daughter of the late Marvin Stanley Lantz and Lena Beatrice (Propst) Lantz. She was also preceded in death by one brother, Charles William Lantz; and two sisters, Margaret Lantz and Rosabelle Patch. She is survived by a special friend, Chester Mackereth of Cumberland, Md.; two nieces, Cynthia Hinkle of Petersburg and Sherry Cain of Palm Coast, Fla.; three great-nieces, Rebecca Hinkle, Jessica Hinkle and Ashley Cain; three great-nephews, William Wesley Hinkle, Nathan Lee Hinkle and Dylan Thomas Cain; and one great-great-niece, Hailey Cain. At her request, she was cremated. Memorial services were March 27, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Petersburg. Private interment was in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Franklin. Lossie Orlando "Shorty" VanMeter, 87, of Upper Tract, died March 19, at the home of his son, Gary VanMeter, in Woodsfield, Ohio. Born Sept. 25, 1918, in Grant County, he was the son of the late Guy and Liddie VanMeter. He was also preceded in death by one son, John VanMeter. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Helmick) VanMeter of Petersburg; three sons, Gary VanMeter of Woodsfield, Jim VanMeter of Ohio and Warnie VanMeter of Franklin; two daughters, Bonnie Knight and JoAnn VanMeter, both of Akron, Ohio; six stepsons, Donnie VanMeter, Ronnie VanMeter, David VanMeter, Lester VanMeter, Mike VanMeter and Michael Lynn VanMeter, all of Upper Tract; three sisters, Joy "Micky" Whetzel of Virginia, Telbie VanMeter of Petersburg and Belle Dye of Akron; one brother, Russell "Curley" VanMeter of Upper Tract; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Wanda Foley, 62, of Stafford, Va., and formerly of Petersburg, died March 19, at her residence. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Roy Whetzel Sr. and Hazel Whetzel; one son, Randy Whetzel Surface; and two brothers, Ralph Whetzel and Roger Whetzel. She is survived by two daughters, Tammy Baltzell and Lisa Haney, both of Stafford County, Va.; two sisters, Sue Abel and Dottie Cook, both of Stafford County; two brothers, Roy Whetzel Jr. of Stafford County and Gary Whetzel of Fredericksburg, Va.; and four grandchildren, Nathan Decatur, Rachel Baltzell, Travis Decatur and Megan Baltzell, all of Stafford County.
