William Vinton Alt, 81, of Upper Tract, died Friday, Dec. 28, at the E.A. Hawse Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Baker. Born Aug. 1, 1926, in Landes, he was the son of the late Enoch and Sarah (Ratcliff) Alt. He was also preceded in death by four sisters, infant Arvella Alt, Mildred Rohrbaugh, Velma Stump and Thelma Catherine Alt. He is survived by his wife, Marie Alice (VanMeter) Alt; one son, Michael Alt of Upper Tract; one brother, Roy E. Alt of Cabins; and several nieces and nephews. Born Aug. 8, 1932, in Petersburg, she was the daughter of the late Henry C. and Lillie Jane (Keplinger) Keplinger. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Homer L. Richard Anthony "Rick" Cullers, 48, of Moorefield, died Thursday, Dec. 27, at Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg. Born Nov. 20, 1959, in Alexandria, Va., he was the son of Maxine E. (Fitzwater) Cullers of Petersburg, and the late Stewart E. Cullers. He was also preceded in death by one brother. Paul Willis Leach, 80, of Purgitsville, died Friday, Jan. 25, at Shady Grove Hospital in Rockville, Md. Born Jan. 3, 1928, in Petersburg, he was the son of the late Wilbur and Annie (Calhoun) Leach. Mr. Leach was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, a graduate of Berea College and received a master's degree from the University of Michigan. He worked for NASA at the Goddard Flight Center and was a mathematician for the N.S.A. at Fort Meade, Md. He is survived his wife, Violet A. (Barbe) Leach; one son, Greig Willis Leach of Richmond, Va.; one daughter, Barbara (Leach) Rohrer of Castle Rock, Colo.; four grandchildren, Austin Willis Leach, Kerrigan Leach, Neal Rohrer and Kelsee Rohrer; and one sister, Irene Siler of Martinsburg. Mrs. Christina "Teeny" Pratt, 85, of Moorefield, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, at Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg. Born March 5, 1922, in Rig, she was the daughter of the late Adam and Bessie (Bobo) Crites. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Luther A. Pratt, October 1972; and one brother, Norman Crites. Mrs. Ruby Anna (Crites) Simmons, 88, of Petersburg, passed away peacefully Monday, Jan. 21, at her home. Born Oct. 29, 1919 in Durgon, she was the daughter of the late Sam and Minnie (Jenkins) Crites. She was also preceded in death by her husband, W. Jettie Simmons, June 23, 2006; two brothers, Richard Crites and Cecil Crites; and two sisters, Thelma Shierer and Vernon Bergdoll. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Mrs. Simmons was raised by her aunt and uncle, Jeff and Molly Crites. She was a member of Grace lutheran Church, Petersburg and a member of Petersburg Chapter 146 Order of the Eastern Star. She is survived by two sons, D. Vaughn Simmons and wife Mariann of Harrisonburg, Va. and Pastor David W. Simmons and wife Linda of Burlington; three grandchildren, Jonathan Simmons, Terri Hayes and husband, Eric, and Libby Orebaugh and husband, Greg; two great-grandchildren, Katie and Brittney Curry; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Virginia (Vance) Adamson, 91, of Onego, died Thursday, Jan. 31, at Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg. Born May 22, 1916, in Roaring Creek, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Nellie (Phares) Vance. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Theodore R. "Ted" Adamson, Nov. 7, 1998; and one sister, Jerelene Mongold. She is survived by one son, John A. Mrs. Deborah Lambert Kauffman, 54, of Boonsboro, Md. and formerly of Lahmansville, died Sunday, Jan. 27, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, Frederick, Md. Born Dec. 31, 1923, in Pendleton County, he was the son of the late Joel Kisamore and Clara (Dolly) Kisamore. He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Charlotte Ann; one brother, Burl Kisamore; and one sister, Versie Carr. He is survived by his wife, Mae A. Annalee Southers, 87, of Janesville, Wis., died Thursday, Feb. 7, at University Hospital, Madison, Wis. Born Nov. 22, 1920, in Petersburg, she was the daughter of the late Dewy Michael Alt and Desi (Judy) Alt. She married Leo F. Southers on June 10, 1959. He preceded her in death on June 2, 2000. She was also preceded in death by one son, Robert Starett; one grandson; one granddaughter; and one great-grandson. She is survived by one daughter, Janet King of Arizona; two sons, Charles Starett of West Virginia and Michael Southers of Janesville; one brother, Dewey Alt of West Virginia; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
