Last Friday night Petersburg High School welcomed back members of the 1976 Vikingettes basketball team. The team, coached by Trent Veach, was recognized for its historic success on the court, compiling an outstanding 78–5 record during their time at PHS. Nine former players were in attendance and pictured with their coach.

Coach Jon Webster’s Petersburg Lady Vikings returned home Friday night and delivered an impressive performance, forcing 32 Moorefi eld turnovers and shooting 47% from the fl oor in a 78-55 win over the rival Yellow Jackets. The Lady Vikings raced out to a 9-0 lead and led 18-6 after a quarter of play.

The Petersburg Vikings turned a slow start into a dominant performance Friday night, knocking down 11 three-pointers and shooting 53% from the fl oor in an impressive 82-49 win over WVSSAC Class AA Region II opponent Philip Barbour. Philip Barbour jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, but the Vikings settled in, tying the game at 17 after eight minutes of play.

The Union Tigers picked up their fi rst win of the season Thursday night with a 50–33 road victory over the Valley Lumberjacks. Union built separation with balanced scoring and steady defensive pressure, holding Valley to 33 points on its home fl oor.

Petersburg High School boys’ basketball team traveled to Lost Creek on Saturday afternoon for a regional matchup with the South Harrison Hawks. Petersburg returned home with a hard fought 58-53 victory. The win extends the Vikings’ win streak to four games.

The Vikings began the New Year battling against local rivals at the annual Baker Brawl hosted by East Hardy. Hampshire, Moorefield, Pendleton County, and Tucker County were also in attendance. This is the fi rst year as a program for Tucker County. The team fi nished 4-1 with wins against Hampshire (48-18), Pendleton (53-12), East Hardy (42- 18), and Tucker (60-0).
