
Last week, Grant County Schools superintendent Mitch Webster and schools facility director Brent Nelson traveled to Charleston to attend a School Building Authority (SBA) meeting in which the agency would be awarding $49 million for school needs. A total of 31 counties submitted requests during this SBA funding cycle, overall asking for approximately $170 million. The submission from Grant County was for $5 million for a renovation and update project that will modernize Petersburg High School out of the 1960s.

The Grant County Sheriff’s Department arrested a Florida man last week after he was seen driving at over 100 mph and later crashing into a fence. James Rubin Holton, 26, of Jacksonville, Fla., was arrested on Dec. 18 for fleeing in a vehicle with reckless regard. The incident occurred at approximately 7:25 a.m. Lt. Lambert of the sheriff’s offi ce was conducting a road patrol on West Virginia Route 42 near Veterans Lane when he observed a vehicle driving northbound at a speed that appeared to exceed the posted speed limit of 55 mph.

The jury trial for Lawrence “Grasshopper” Puffenbarger, which had been scheduled to begin last week in Hampshire County Circuit Court, has been rescheduled.
