Emergency crews from across the Eastern Panhandle joined forces Wednesday evening in a coordinated rescue and recovery operation in Grant County’s remote Smoke Hole area.
Led by Deputy Chief H. Whetzel of the Petersburg Volunteer Fire Company, responders were dispatched after reports of an injured individual in rugged terrain. The location’s steep landscape and limited access required specialized resources, including ground search teams, drones, high-angle rescue crews, and aerial support from Maryland State Police Aviation Command’s Trooper 5.

Grant County is preparing to install the county’s first and only Safe Haven Baby Box—a secure, climate-controlled and alarmed drop-off point that provides parents in crisis a safe, legal and confidential option to surrender their newborns.
The box arrived at the Grant County EMS station recently. EMS staff will install it in a designated room, meeting all safety requirements. EMS Director Jeffrey Teter explained that the box will utilize a repurposed window opening that locks automatically once a baby is placed inside, ensuring the infant’s safety until trained personnel retrieve them. “While cameras can’t be installed, to protect privacy, the setup includes a nearby trailer to give a semi-privacy shield to the box from public view of Virginia Avenue,” Teter added.

An exhibit of paintings by local artist, the late Bruce Schrader is now open at the Moomau Library, 18 Mt. View Street, in Petersburg.
Paintings are of scenes from the Carolinas and Florida, areas in the western U.S. and some are of local scenes. The pictures of the coastal U.S. are vivid, sunny, colorful images of waterways, lush foliage, quirky small buildings, and animals.
Schrader and his wife, Nancy, were enthusiastic travelers, and these pictures seem to show how charmed they were with these areas they visited. This exhibit, presented by Grant County Arts Council Inc. and curated by Marci Beyersdorfer, another local visual artist, is the second of several exhibits of Schrader’s paintings,
This exhibit is free and open to the public and will be available for viewing through late November, during regular library hours. Information may be obtained by calling 304-257-4891.
