VIKINGS ROLL THROUGH THREE-GAME WEEK WITH WINS OVER OAK HILL, CAMERON, DODDRIDGE

Coach Stacey Berg’s Petersburg High School basketball team started off their three-game week at Oak Hill Monday night. The class AA Vikings matched up with the Class AAAA Red Devils. Petersburg built a nine-point half-time and held on in the second half for a 53-50 win.
The two teams traded baskets throughout most of the first quarter, Oak Hill led 16-15 after eight minutes of play. The Vikings knocked down three three-point field goals in the period.
In the second quarter, Caden Ours knocked down three triples to help give Petersburg a 34-25 lead at the half.
The Red Devils opened the second half on a 9 – 0 run to tie the game at 34 with 3:38 left in the third quarter. Petersburg responded and went on a 7 – 0 run to take a 41 – 34 lead with 1:36 left. Oak Hill would then end the third period on a 5 – 0 run to make the score 41 – 39 after 24 minutes of play.
The Vikings would not give up the lead in the final quarter. Petersburg led 51 – 50 with 8.5 seconds remaining, the Vikings defense would force an Oak Hill turnover, Payton Metheny would then knock down a pair of free throws to seal the win.
Ours led Petersburg with 28 points, four rebounds, and five steals. Kaleb Kuhn chipped in 14 points and 9 rebounds. Metheny added nine points, three steals, and three assisted. Lucas Riggleman pulled down nine rebounds.

Petersburg faced the Cameron Dragons Tuesday morning in the Country Roads Classic held on the campus of West Virginia State University in Institute. The Vikings defense held Cameron to single digit points in each quarter as they cruised to a 67 – 25 victory.
The Vikings erupted for 27 first quarter points to build a big lead. In the second period Petersburg outscored Cameron 16 – 4 to take a 43 – 8 lead into the locker room.
The Dragons managed nine points in the third quarter, edging Petersburg 9 – 8. The Vikings carried a 52 – 17 advantage into the fourth quarter.
Kaleb Kuhn and Payton Metheny combined for 12 of the Petersburg’s 16 fourth quarter points as the Vikings doubled up the Dragons 16 – 8.
Kuhn and Ours each scored 22 points to lead Petersburg. Metheny added 11 points, while Lucas Riggleman contributed eight points.

Petersburg welcomed Doddridge County for a Valentine’s Day matinee matchup. The Bulldogs, ranked No. 3 in the most recent WVSACA poll, entered the contest with a 14 – 2 record.
The Vikings were ready for the challenge, knocking down 11 three-pointers and shooting 54.5% from the floor in an impressive 82 – 59 victory.
Petersburg opened the contest on a 14 – 0 run and led 23 – 9 at the end of the first quarter. Caden Ours and Payton Metheny combined for 18 points in the opening quarter.
The Vikings extended their lead to as much as 19 in the second period and led 41 – 23 at the half.
Doddridge opened the second half on a 10 – 0 run to cut the Vikings lead to eight with 5:39 left in the third quarter. Petersburg responded with a 12 – 1 run to take a 19-point lead 53 – 34 and force a Bulldog’s time out with 3:10 left in the quarter. The Vikings led 60 – 41 after 24 minutes of play.
The Vikings were 6 – 8 from the free throw line in the final quarter, outscoring Doddridge 22 – 18 to secure the win.
Metheny led Petersburg with 26 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Kaleb Kuhn added 23 points and five rebounds. Ours finished with 23 points, seven rebounds, and six assists. Brandon McDonald chipped in seven points, while Carter Hardy contributed five points and five rebounds.
With the victory, Petersburg improves to 13 – 4. They return to action Tuesday at home against Keyser. Junior Varsity tip-off is scheduled for 6pm.
